midnight marauder, is rolling techno fuzzing with a teetering bass line, reggae sirens and jamaican patois adlibs. typical of the two involved, its decidedly grey area - impossible to categorise if you tried. one thing about this track is certain though – its primed for peak time on the dancefloor, with swung drum rhythms and a snaking acid line that wont quit.

the a side starts with a haunting deep electro-ish intro track >hall of mirrors<, followed by >l.a. rocks electro<, a phat electro bomb with heavy vocoder action and 80s b-boy vibe on it. a3 >malos de la noche< is a monster electro-disco track in giorgio moroder kicking back style, spiced up with a deep bassline and sweeping synths. pura koka! >russian invasion< on the b side is melancholic but yet hard rocking electro track with catchy drum programming and massive synths – an absolute hit! the last track on the ep is >los medicos con coca<, a smooth electro-disco jam inspired by miami vice. just imagine sonny and rico in their black daytona spider cruising down the streets of miami on a sunny summer day in 1984.

when it comes to offbeat raw detroit house music you cant really mess with omar-s and his fxhe label. on this new double pack hes keeping it in the family with his cousin big strick providing us with 3 fresh tracks and omar-s treating us to his versions of his cousins tracks. both twelves flow nicely, mixing up early chicago sounds (think virgo, larry heard) with some uber-crisp drum programming from strick and omar-s. fans of big stricks 7 days ep will not be disappointed with this. six tracks filled with raw grit and jacking rhythms, house heads should definitely pick this up.

evoking memories of the heady days of 90s house, toby delivers lashings of guitar licked funk and powerfully warm bass. polished to perfection by the sultry vocals of ilhem. this is one track that is calling out for sea, sunshine and beautiful people!

the one-two kick drum beat that starts “in the dark of the night” functions as a bit of a tease. instead of merely establishing the languid pace of the track, it has the power of suggestion, and its stark nakedness raises the question of what will happen after the music fully launches. a few seconds later, a punch-drunk, flanging keyboard is the first clue that the listener is in for an off-kilter ride, the sauntering bassline that next appears adds a springy, funk bounce. but it’s the tripped-out, multi-tracked vocals of fernando miranda rios, aka michoacan, the producer behind this slow reveal, that give the song its peculiar, space-yvibe. it’s like david byrne with funk aspirations and a vaguely cosmic feel. the b-side remix, courtesy of italy’s clap rules, feels like more of a re-build. the song has been taken apart and put back together with brand new parts. instead of more relaxed, dazed funk at the core, it’s a glittery, disco-ball splattered track with glossy keys all around.

the spaniard manuel fernandez llorente had a classical musical upbringing, studying at the music conservatorium in madrid. he has been composing and producing electronic music since 1996, not only releasing on his own label >7noise< but more importantly also being licensed for various major compilations. now he is releasing his first tracks on highgrade records. at first, >addiction< unspectacularly plods on towards house heaven, but then the sparse vocals and timeless organ sounds give you a warm and soft electro shock. the first track on the b side >the gull< shows off prompts talents as a composer. a very discreet melody blankets the straight beat, taking away the coldness of the bass. a beautiful dream track that should never really end. >mechanic< brings it home and is right in your face, a journey into minimal techno country, where you meet the sound ghosts that prompt has summoned. a single drum beat here, a voice there and a now and again a sound shred that are all meticulously arranged to make the perfect atmosphere.

profan (...remember wolfgang voigts abstract techno label from the 1990s) is back from the future, and again complicates the situation. like his earlier projects, the brand new sog (strictly limited to 400 copies) release combines seemingly familiar and extremely unfamiliar signs, and in the most unusual way bends them around the utterly familiar bass drum. the result is a conspiracy of four sound frescos of peculiar beauty, and indeed they deserve the title abweichung (engl. deviance) - named after voigts painting featured on the cover. this is minimal art techno that raises questions.
profan 32 will be released before profan 31which will be released a bit later. yet both are heralds of the art publication/double cd compilation: wolfang voigt – werkschau to be released in spring 2010.
